When the world seemed to stand still, something extraordinary began to take root.
For Bob and Selena, lockdown wasn't just a period of isolation, it was a time of creative blossoming. What started as a playful experiment—crafting roadside botanical sculptures from local flora—soon evolved into something far more meaningful. From these humble beginnings, Immortal Soil was born, a project that merges their deep connection to nature with their passion for sustainability.
Can you tell us a little bit about your background and how it led you to create Immortal Soil?
After many years of collective teeth cutting out in the world, during the terrible awful of lock down time we started making gorilla side of the road botanic sculptures with what ever was growing in abundance locally. Just for our own amusement. It slowly morphed and grew into its own entity. We decided to run with it and Immortal Soil was born.
Bob and Selena, what did you have for breakfast?
Selena- a delicious omelette made by Bob (he is also a clever cook) using local eggs, herbs, cheese and a knock your head off black coffee with a bit of cinnamon and a dash of milk.
Bob- most mornings is a Bob surprise omelette. My favourite is smokey fish and some micro greens with a nice milky tea.
If you were to use one of the Herb Remedy soap bars in your bath or shower today, which one would it be and why?
Selena- I’m a sucker for the peppermint soap. I like the feeling of the freshness and the brightness of the fragrance.
Bob- I’m all about the coffee soap. I love the exfoliating quality of the coffee grounds, the aroma to really wake you up and the lemongrass leaving you feeling fresh and clean.
Are there ways you incorporate herbs into your daily life, can you tell us all about it?
Selena- Yes , absolutely. My mother was a herbalist and would always be whipping up something. A special potion of the plants if I was ever in trouble or was sick or my heart was broken. Resulting in I always take a herbal mix to help me along in life. We also eat a lot of herbs in our food cooked at home and I love an essential oil of any type.
Bob- Well I eat a lot of herbs, I love them on everything. Lots of fresh parsley, Dill and coriander in salads and fresh rosemary in oven bakes. We have them all around the kitchen in vases, the aroma is really heart warming. I also turn to them for their health benefits. Most recently having pneumonia and having the good concoctions from Amanda to get through and recover.
Can you share a memory associated with a particular scent - the first thing that comes to mind - good or bad?
Selena- I distinctly remember the scent of both the giant flowering daytura tree outside my bedroom window at night time when I was little and the smell of the paint in my dads shed. He used to take the tops off the paint tins and underneath the dripping paint had solidified into long candle like shapes . He’d sing happy birthday as though it was a cake and this scent will forever bring back that memory.
Bob- I grew up riding horses and motorbikes so it’s horse manure and leaded petrol for me. The combination of the two leave me with the scent memory of freedom.
